Eight years ago, a mutual friend brought Rhaffy and Dwin, The Stoic together for a recording session in Victoria Island, Lagos. What began as a working relationship quickly grew into a friendship, eventually becoming a creative partnership shaped by their complementary strengths. Over time, listeners have come to see Rhaffy as the yin to Dwin, The Stoic’s yang. Rhaffy’s production creates space for the excitement and uncertainty of falling in love, while Dwin’s husky, reassuring vocals give voice to the tenderness, vulnerability, and heartbreak that can follow.
Rhaffy, born Nwanyanwu Raphael Chinedu, is a Nigerian producer, songwriter, and artist whose sound moves across Afropop, electronic dance music, soul, and hip-hop. His work behind the scenes is matched by his own artistic pursuits, with his 2024 solo releases, “Serenade” and “ODA CITY Vol. 1,” a collaborative project with Tentik, showcasing his range as both a performer and producer-rapper. His genre-fluid approach brings a distinctive sonic dimension to “R&D,” allowing the album’s different expressions of love to unfold across varied musical textures.
Born Edwin Madu, Dwin, The Stoic is widely known for his ballads and his ability to turn personal feelings into vivid narratives. His love for storytelling began early, fuelled by a childhood spent reading fiction and imagining stories of his own. That interest eventually found its way into music, leading him to write his first song in 2007. This instinct for narrative continues to shape his artistry, allowing him to explore the many ways people experience and make sense of love.
Their ten-track album, “R&D,” is the duo’s first full-length album together and their second collaborative project following “Love Lanes,” released in 2023. Across the record, they explore love in its different forms, from the thrill of attraction and the comfort of commitment to desire, longing, and the memories that linger when relationships change.
The album opens with “Music,” where a Yoruba chant, “keere keere o,” sets a celebratory tone before inviting listeners to surrender to the music. “Heavenly” captures the almost otherworldly feeling of being drawn to someone, “1 4 U” offers reassurance through a promise of support in both joyful and difficult moments. On “Render,” love becomes an unexpected source of peace, “Side” explores the desire for closeness when patience begins to wear thin. “Just Dance” shifts toward physical attraction, celebrating the magnetic pull of movement, while “Hear Me” captures the intensity of feelings that become increasingly difficult to contain.
The latter part of the album turns toward shared experiences and the lasting impressions people leave on one another. “Cotonou” recalls intimate moments through images of sunlight, laughter, smiles, and two people moving in sync. “Company” explores the strange familiarity of encountering someone again, evoking the feeling of déjà vu. The album closes with “Abike,” a direct invitation for a woman to express what she wants and how she feels.
Across “R&D,” Dwin, The Stoic and Rhaffy move fluidly between affection, desire, reassurance, and nostalgia. Their chemistry allows each track to capture a different moment in the experience of loving someone, without reducing love to a single feeling or outcome. For anyone who has fallen deeply, searched for closeness, or held on to memories of a meaningful connection.
