Tutu Kantu, born Philip Munyao, first gained widespread recognition across East Africa as one half of the acoustic and Afro-pop collective Vijana Barubaru. Emerging from Mathare, Nairobi, he brings a personal touch to his music, drawing listeners into stories of love and everyday life. His new single, “Itisha Maji,”explores the comfort of having someone who makes you feel safe, especially after a difficult journey.

The song begins with a tender welcome as Tutu Kantu tells his “mama” to take it easy, reminding her thatshe has survived the accident and arrived safely. He sings, “lala mamou, lala kifuani,” inviting her to sleep on his chest as he assures her that the days of complaining night and day are over. He opens the window to let in the breeze, hoping to keep evil spirits away, and asks her to hand over her burdens so she can rest. His message is simple: she belongs in his home, and her joy is his joy.

The chorus brings a playful, sensual energy to the song as he sings “itisha maji” and “maliza kiu mama,” inviting her to ask for water and quench her thirst. Beneath the flirtation is a deeper expression of devotion, with Tutu Kantu presenting love as both passion and the willingness to care for another person.

“Itisha Maji” captures the feeling of finding someone you want to protect, comfort, and welcome without hesitation, turning the idea of home into something built through affection, reassurance, and shared happiness.
