BIG FIZZO TELLS STORIES OF LOVE, LOSS AND BELONGING ON “SON OF ALKEBULAN”
Big Fizzo is a legendary Burundian singer, songwriter, dancer, and producer whose career has helped shape the country’s modern music scene. Born Mugani Desire, he has spent decades building a name within Buja Fleva while connecting with audiences across East Africa. His new album “Son of Alkebulan” brings together 14 tracks that reflect on identity, love, heartbreak, resilience, and the desire to be remembered.
The album opens with “Umurundi,” a track that wears his Burundian heritage with pride. From there, he moves through different experiences of love and relationships. “Tell Me” asks for truth after an unexpected breakup, while “Ab’isi, Pt. II” examines the pain of betrayal from people who were once trusted. On “Nimeridhika,” Big Fizzo finds contentment in a love that satisfies, and “Ababare” offers encouragement to people navigating difficult moments. “Niruze” follows, adding another layer to the emotional journey.
The second half of the album explores romance, resilience, freedom, and legacy. “Donna” and “Afro Angel” celebrate women who have captured his heart, while “Gahanga” returns to themes of Burundian pride and resilience. “Don’t Worry” offers reassurance to a partner, “Nimelewa” captures the intoxicating feeling of love, and “Let Me Know” asks for clarity in a relationship. On “Single,” he embraces freedom from relationship drama. The closing track, “Muzonyibuka,” looks toward the future with a simple message: he wants his contributions to music and culture to be remembered.
“Son of Alkebulan” brings together the different sides of Big Fizzo’s story, from where he comes from to what he has experienced and the mark he hopes to leave behind. The project moves between languages and moods, but at its centre is a man reflecting on a life lived fully.
